The Transcript

Hello and welcome! you are listening to bite sized branding – the podcast the helps you with your branding in bite sized chunks! I am your host – Tabitha Mills from Brand Print Promote.

In this week’s episode we are going to go through the seventh step in your branding journey. If you haven’t already listened to episode one to six – you might want to do that first. These initial podcasts are here to set you up for clear concise branding for you and or your business – working through them systematically will set you up with all the tools you need.

Here is a quick recap on last week’s episode. Last week we talked about your logo and what you need to know if you already have one or if you are creating it from scratch the things that you be aware of.

Step Seven: Your Website

There is a lot to think about when you are creating your website. I want you at this point to go back to the worksheet that you wrote what you stand for and the feeling you want people to have when they interact with you on. This is just as important with your website as it is with your colours & your logo.

When it comes to creating your website, you can build your own or you can get someone to build it for you. I am obviously biased towards getting a professional to do it as we create them on a regular basis but the only thing that I will mention is to make sure that you own your website – that if you choose to you can pick it up and move it from the platform that it currently sits on to a different one. In the instance of wix and other pay per month website options if you choose to move to a different platform then you have to rebuild your site. You should have a chat with your developer and see if they have a payment plan so you can have the website you want today.

Another note I have for you is to work out what you expect from your website and how you plan to use it in your overall marketing of your business. I will do some more podcasts another day about websites but right now we are focusing on the branding side of them.

From a focus on branding you want to ensure that you are using the colours you have chosen and your up to date logo. If the colours you have chosen are all really bright you might want to look at using them as the pops of colour around your website – like the colours for the buttons, headings and banners for the page. Whatever you do just keep it consistent so that someone who is getting to know your brand can still identify it as you.

When you are putting images on your website you also want to be sure of a couple things.

  1. You have permission to use the images. In the past we have had clients download images from the internet and think they can use them any way they want. Unfortunately, unless you have taken the image yourself, received permission from the person who did or purchased the image then you may not have copywrite licence to use it.
  2. Make sure your images add to the look and feel of your website. Imagine you are a local café who is creating an online menu for people to order takeaway or delivery. Would you use a professional photo taken of the dish or something that is taken in a rush before the food is eaten? Do not get me wrong – I understand that professional photography can be expensive, or you might not have time or inclination to learn. What I am trying to get at is that if what you are selling doesn’t look good it is harder to sell. It detracts from your brand and dilutes your message.

The other brand related thing I wanted to touch on here is branded content that lives on your website. This is your blog posts, your videos and anything else that links from your site. Your first and last check box before you hit publish really needs to be – is this in line with my message? Does this align with my brand and will it help my clients? If yes hit publish, if not then a rethink, rewrite or rerecord might be needed.

There is a lot more that we can cover in the space of websites but that is it for the branding section today. If you have any questions for this step or anything else please send them through to our email [email protected]
