The Transcript

Hello and welcome! you are listening to bite sized branding – the podcast the helps you with your branding in bite sized chunks! I am your host – Tabitha Mills from Brand Print Promote.

In this weeks episode we are going to go through the ninth step in your branding journey. If you haven’t already listened to episode one to eight – you might want to do that first. These initial podcasts are here to set you up for clear concise branding for you and or your business – working through them systematically will set you up with all the tools you need.

Here is a quick recap on last week’s episode. Last week we talked about social media and how you can look at it as a tool to compliment your online presence and to only use what you can maintain consistently. There are entire businesses that conduct themselves solely on social media – it all depends on how you and your clients interact.

Step Nine: Printed Materials

Now it goes without saying that you have a lot of options in the printed materials space. Everything from business cards and brochures to billboards and sign-writing on your car the sky is literally the limit.

What we have created and seen clients do promotes a great customer experience. Our recommendation here is to try to not do everything all at once. Unless of course you have a large budget for printing. Business cards and maybe some branded thank you cards are a good place to start. If you are a service-based business a process document is a also great investment. A process document is something that you give a new client so that you can set the expectations for the transaction. This might be a 20-page booklet, or it could be a one-page flyer depending on your service. We have found clients love that they know what is happening and what to expect in working with us. (as a side note managing client expectations will save you a lot of heart ache if you can work this out early…)

The most important thing that you need to do with all your printed material is to make sure that it is all current! It is so easy to change prices, change logos, colours and forget that then the information on your printed material is out of date. As I am sure you are getting sick of hearing from me is that you need to be consistent! Do you think that giving out an old business card with a new email address handwritten on it or handing out a brochure that had old pricing on it gives that potential client the impression that you want them to of you and your business? Probably not. Keep all your printed stuff together and that way you know what you have and what you need to update when you change something.

You can keep a ledger of sorts this helps if your business uses multiple brochures for product lines or even keep a note of them as version numbers in a file. Anything you can do to keep a handle on them works. Something we suggest you do is look at your business through the eyes of a potential client. Is the information you are presenting giving the impression that you want? When designing printed material, we suggest referring back to your style guide – this could be as simple as the worksheet you created back in the initial steps of these podcasts. Using this as your starting point means that when you do the exercise of looking at all your material together everything should fit right in.

Having templates is also a great way to keep things consistent. A little upfront work makes for a lot less work in the long run.
